ACCT 221 - Payroll Accounting

Credits: 5
In-depth coverage of payroll calculations, payroll taxes, maintaining proper payroll records and preparing necessary deposits and filings. Includes an Excel-based payroll project. Previously ACCT 121.

Enrollment Requirement: ACCT 111  or ACCT& 201  with a grade of 2.0 or higher.

Course Outcomes:
Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:

  1. Compute employee payroll and employer payroll taxes.
  2. Prepare payroll records and reports.
  3. Analyze and journalize payroll transactions in an accounting system.

Program Outcomes
  1. Analyze and record business transactions and activities in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  2. Perform accounting procedures employed in a typical payroll accounting system including preparation of periodic tax forms and timely remittance of tax payments.
  3. Utilize appropriate technology, including word processing and spreadsheet applications, to input, manage, summarize, and interpret business information and to develop forms and reports to assist management in planning operations, identifying potential problems, and controlling business activities.   
  4. Demonstrate critical thinking, analytical and quantitative skills in problem solving, decision making, and responsibility by completing assignments independently and/or as a dependable team member.
