ECED 297 - Montessori Intensive

Credits: 6
An intensive overview of the Montessori Method of Education that includes a synopsis of the entire Montessori curriculum for children ages 3-6 years. Through online study, video-viewing, field trips, and four full days of face to face instruction, students will be introduced into both the theory and practice of the system. Course is appropriate for those who are either new or experienced to the study of Montessori.

Course Outcomes:
Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:

Discuss the main tenets of the Montessori Method of Education.
Use a variety of resources to plan appropriate curriculum.
Create curriculum which supports the areas of practical life, sensory, mathematics, language, music, art and cultural subjects.
Plan developmentally appropriate activities and schedules which promote child growth and learning in the Montessori environment.
Observe and evaluate the Montessori environment.
Determine the qualities and attributes of a high-performance Montessori assistant.

Use developmental milestones and observations of children’s behavior as a foundation for planning appropriate activities.
Advocate for strategies that promote the cultural diversity of children, families and their communities.
Demonstrate effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication
Discuss current issues and trends in early childhood education.
Identify typical and atypical growth and development (cognitive, linguistic, motor, and social).
Positively support children’s whole development.

Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct
Comply with laws (such as IDEA, Section 504, ADA), workplace policies, and procedures in relation to confidentiality, reporting of abuse, discipline, chain of command and delegation and supervision.
