CMST& 101 - Introduction to Communication

Credits: 5
An introductory class to human communication. Students will explore the fundamentals of communication with a survey of communication theory, interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, small group communication, and public communication contexts with an emphasis on communication competence, communication climate, and audience adaptation. 

Enrollment Requirement: Eligible for ENGL 99 ; or instructor consent.

Satisfies Requirement: Humanities/Fine Arts/English

Course Outcomes:
Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:

  1. Respond to different types of communication events with competence.
  2. Research a solution to a small group or interpersonal challenge.
  3. Discuss the relationship between messages, perception, and self. 
  4. Locate communication acts and communication environments within one’s life. 
  5. Describe the influence of communication choices on communication competence.

  2. Use, synthesize or produce needed information ethically. 
  3. Form, analyze, and assess beliefs while demonstrating intellectual humility and respect towards the beliefs of others.
