Natural Resources-Forest Resource Management, BAS

The Bachelors of Applied Science in Forest Resource Management degree prepares students to directly enter employment in several Natural Resources areas. By developing academic skills in mathematics, science, English, humanities, and natural resource courses, the student can apply directly for jobs in natural resources management, forest engineering, water quality or wildlife biology.

Track 1: Sampling and Assessment

Track 2: Forestry Operations

Entry Requirements:

To enter this program, students must have completed a minimum of a two-year associate degree in forestry or related field.  Students who have completed some college coursework but do not have an associate degree or higher are encouraged to meet with academic advisor in the Natural Resources department to develop an educational plan to prepare for entry into the program.

Students must attain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 prior to entry into the BAS degree path.

Students must complete and submit an entry application and be accepted into the program before registering for any upper-division (300- and 400-level) courses.

The following courses or their equivalents are critical to your success in the program and contain foundational knowledge upon which upper-division courses in natural resources build.  Prior completion of these courses is required for entry into the BAS:

Graduation Requirement

Completion of an associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university.

Program Outcomes


Track 1 - Sampling and Assessment 

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and develop skills applying current laws, policies and regulations governing forest land operations and land management as well as the social and political effects of natural resource management including harvest, road construction and public use. 
  2. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate forest resource conditions, including forest health, invasive species and past management to form and carry out prescription to meet landowner objectives in a variety of forest conditions. 
  3. Demonstrate the knowledge of ecological processes and principles and the effects of management on forest land resources. 
  4. Demonstrate the expertise to collect, analyze and evaluate field data using current technology and equipment through scientific and land management processes. 
  5. Integrate geospatial workflows for problem-solving and analysis related to natural resources management through implementation of current GIS software and tools.  

Track 2 - Operations 

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of new technology, equipment and systems used to conduct harvest activities and the ability to conduct harvest planning, design and layout while administering safe working practices involving Labor and Industries as they apply. 
  2. Demonstrate the ability to collect financial data to analyze the profitability of various forest operations and utilize knowledge of business law by applying them to common business practices conducted in a contracting relationship.

Natural Science: (10 credits)


Ten credits of any Natural Science List A or List B courses from Natural Science Distribution  list with a minimum of 5 credits from List A.

Suggested courses include:

Humanities (20 credits)


Twenty credits of any courses from Humanities/Fine Arts/English Distribution  list.

Social Science (10 credits)


Any course that satisfies a Social Science Distribution  requirement.
