Associate in Pre-Nursing, APreN-DTA/MRP

Minimum of 90-91 Credits

The Associate in Pre-Nursing Direct Transfer Agreement/Major Related Program is generally pursued by students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university at the junior level to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (BSN). This degree is designed to meet the distribution requirements at universities in Washington State, by fulfilling the general requirements taken by freshmen and sophomores.

To earn this degree, students must complete a minimum of 90-91-quarter credits in courses numbered 100 or higher (from approved distribution list below) and meet specific distribution requirements. No more than 25 percent of credit requirements may be taken on a pass/no-credit basis. Students should be aware that courses with “Pass” grades may not satisfy the requirements in their major field. Students must attain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 and earn a minimum of 24 credits at Green River College. Nursing programs are competitive and may require a higher GPA overall, a higher GPA in a selected subset of courses or a specific minimum grade in one or more courses.

Students are responsible for knowing transfer requirements and policies, as well as specific course choices and GPA requirements, and are urged to consult the catalog of the institution for which they plan to transfer.

1. Basic Skills (15 credits)


Any course used to satisfy Basic Skills distribution may not be used to satisfy any other portion of the Associate in Pre-Nursing degree requirements.

A. Communication Skills (10 credits)


Courses in this area support the written communication learning outcome.

B. Quantitative Skills/Symbolic Reasoning (5 credits)


Courses in this area support the quantitative and symbolic reasoning learning outcome.

2. Humanities (15 credits)


No more than 10 credits from any one discipline.

A. Communication Studies (5 credits)


B. Minimum of 10 credits from the following


No more than 5 credits in foreign language at the 100-level. No more than 5 credits in performance/skills courses listed below.

Performance/Skills Courses


No more than 5 credits in performance/skills courses can meet the distribution requirements.

3. Social Science (15 credits)


5. Additional Courses (10 credits)


Select 10 credits from the Humanities/Fin Arts/English , Social Science , and Natural Science  distribution lists.

Advising Notes:


  • Seattle University - Requires 10 credits in quantitative/symbolic reasoning with the additional class in college algebra or pre-calculus.
  • Walla Walla University - Requires that the second English composition class be a research writing class.
  • Washington State University - Requires a human diversity course. See WSU “Diversity Course Identification Guidelines” or choose courses that include minority, non-western, ethnic or other “area” studies.
  • University of Washington - Require 10 credits in quantitative/symbolic reasoning with the additional class in college algebra or pre-calculus (at UW Seattle, a class in Logic also serves for the additional class). Requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for three Natural Sciences courses or a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 for four Natural Sciences courses. Requires 100 hours of healthcare experience.

Transferability of Credits


Green River College is fully accredited. Academic courses will usually be accepted by other institutions offering the same (or similar) courses. However, each institution has its own transfer policies and each student is responsible for knowing the transfer and admission requirements of the receiving institution. Students are urged to consult with their advisor and a representative from the college they plan to attend after Green River.
