This pathway is designed for students majoring in sociology. However, students may adopt this pathway to also complete concentrations in any of the following areas designated by the college: Asian Studies , Black Studies , Diversity Studies , Gender Studies , Global Studies , and Hispanic Studies .

This program map may also be adapted for students interested in the following careers: law and justice; government, social services, and non-profit; research and teaching; and health and public policy.

Sociology students are often interested in learning about society and taking action to address social problems and facilitate equity and justice across society. With its broad focus on society, institutions, and social relations, sociology is one of the most diverse fields you can study, and consequently prepares students for a wide range of careers. Amongst the many possible uses of a sociology degree include the following career options:

Law and Justice: This pathway is best for students pursuing a profession in the law and justice field. This track is well suited for students interested in becoming a lawyer, a victims’ rights advocate, police officer, or community officer.

Government, Social Services, and Non-Profit Organizations: This track prepares students for work in governmental and non-profit sectors as well as human resources and social work. Specific activities in these fields range from data analysis and policy research to program management, institutional organization and management, and providing social services for people in need.

Research and Teaching Track: Research and teaching are amongst the most common paths students of sociology pursue. This path will prepare students for academic careers at universities or community colleges, as well as jobs as researchers in the public and private sectors.

Health and Public Policy Track: A track in health and pubic policy will prepare students for jobs in the healthcare industry.  Careers associated with this pathway include social worker, gerontologist, hospital administrator, researcher, patient advocate, and policy analyst.

Use the Career and Program Explorer  page to explore more details about the occupations.
