AMES 150 - Race and Ethnicity in the Pacific Credits: 5 An interdisciplinary social and theoretical overview of the interrelationships that exist among various groups in the Northwest consisting of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Focuses on the historical, economical, political and social connections of Native American, African American, Latino/a, and Asian American/Pacific Islander with each other and with the dominant society.
Enrollment Requirement: Eligible for ENGL 99 or instructor consent.
Satisfies Requirement: Social Science and Diversity
Course Outcomes: Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:
- Distinguish social constructions, power relationships, prejudice, discrimination and segregation, integration, pluralism and assimilation.
- Articulate the ways in which race/ethnicity intersects with gender, sexuality, and class.
- Indicate key historical events unique to the history of race and ethnicity in the Northwest.
- Discuss significant contributions that each group makes to the development of Northwest history and society.
- Interpret narratives and frames of reference held by members of different racial and ethnic groups.
- Investigate problems and opportunities that various racial and ethnic groups face in the Northwest.
Program Outcomes
- Articulate knowledge of comparative and interdisciplinary topics related to ethnic minority groups’ narratives.
- Demonstrate skill in community organizing.
