HEALTH 102 - Fundamentals of Healthcare and the Human Body Credits: 5 Covers the basics of human anatomy and physiology including anatomical terminology, basic biochemistry, cells and tissues, and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic/immune, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. Introduces common human disease processes and general medical terminology. Includes an introduction to the foundational skills necessary to work in healthcare including critical thinking, communication, legal and ethical responsibilities, safety, and professional development. Previously HEALTH 101.

Course Outcomes: Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:
- Explain the organization of the human body, role of genetics, lifestyle and aging in health.
- Explain growth and development across the lifespan.
- Explain the large organ system and the basic anatomy and physiology of common diseases and disabilities.
- Demonstrate basic professional communication skills needed to work effectively with supervisors, fellow staff members and patients/clients.
- Identify responsibilities relative to legal issues, which include patient client confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
- Demonstrate an awareness of different cultural health practices and the importance of respecting a variety of cultural beliefs in the workplace.
- Demonstrate the healthcare worker’s role and responsibilities regarding ethics, legal obligations, and abuse laws.
- Demonstrate basic medical math skills and describe the necessity for accuracy with medication calculations and dosages.
- Define social determinants of health and vulnerable populations.
- Define the importance of advocacy for the populations we care for within the scope of practice.
