Philosophy Concentration

20 Credits

The Philosophy Concentration is designed to encourage students to cultivate the skills necessary for a life and career of critical thinking, truth seeking, clarity, rationality, reflection, and independent judgment. Students who focus their humanities and electives courses on philosophical subject matter develop excellent written and verbal communication, as well as reading and public speaking skills. The study of philosophy also helps students build their capacities for moral and ethical reasoning which they can use to excel in any career, adapt to a changing world, and find fulfillment in areas of their personal lives.

LIST A courses focus on introducing students to the basic skills of philosophy by teaching them how to analyze and understand arguments and assertions so that poor reasoning can be identified, critiqued, and replaced with better reasoning.

LIST B courses focus on subdisciplines in philosophy where students will dive into more specific subject matter and learn how to understand and fairly consider the views of others, helping them to work across differences and engage with people of all backgrounds and experiences.

Students may choose to complete this concentration of study and have it posted to their transcript ONLY when the student successfully completes the Associate in Arts-Direct Transfer Agreement  (AA-DTA) degree. Otherwise courses taken will transfer to four year universities on a course by course basis only.

Students are urged to consult with their Green River advisor to plan their programs of study. Students are also urged to consult with a representative from the university they plan to attend.
