Chemistry is the study of the composition, properties, and interactions of matter. Much of chemistry can be described as taking substances apart and putting the parts together again in different ways. Chemistry degrees equip graduates with problem-solving, analytical, and laboratory skills that are indispensable in many scientific and technical fields, including education and research. Graduates can work with pharmaceuticals, developing new drugs and treatments, or in materials science by creating innovative materials with various applications. Environmental chemists address pollution and promote sustainability, whereas analytical chemists are essential in quality control, forensics, and regulatory compliance. This versatility makes a chemistry degree a strong foundation for a wide range of career paths.
See Articulation Agreements for more details about the colleges who accept this degree.
Students who have not taken high school chemistry, or need a refresher, should take CHEM& 140 - General Chemistry Prep with Lab as soon as they meet the math and English prerequisites for the course.
It is strongly suggested that student complete science sequences at one college.
The yearlong organic chemistry sequence (CHEM& 261-262-263) at GRC begins only in fall quarters. Students should consider this when creating an educational plan.
Students considering an advanced degree in Chemistry (e.g. Master’s or PhD) are encouraged to take additional math courses (e.g. MATH& 254, MATH 238 and 240), schedule and time permitting.

Sample Schedule
This sample schedule is provided as a guide for a full-time student with placement into ENGL& 101 and appropriate math. This curriculum map assumes a fall quarter start and taking no classes in summer quarter. A customized curriculum map will be needed for students starting the program in a different quarter and in other circumstances. Not every course is offered every quarter: careful planning is required to complete the degree in the fewest number of quarters. Students should meet with a faculty advisor throughout their course of study. An customized curriculum map can be accessed in Navigate.
