Associate in Science Transfer Track 2-Physics Curriculum Map

Astronomy is the study of the universe. As an astronomer you may study the origins of the universe, or how stars and planetary systems form. You may get to use telescopes based on Earth, or in space to study and understand distant objects like pulsars, galaxies and black holes, or events like supernovae. In cross-disciplinary areas like astrobiology or astrochemistry, you may seek to understand the origins of life and guide humanity’s search for extra-terrestrial life. If you choose the theoretical side of astronomy, you may use data collected by other astronomers to develop new ideas and new ways of understanding the universe. We offer an “Intro to Astronomy” course to give you a brief glimpse of the exciting possibilities.

Physics is the study of the natural world. Physicists seek to understand nature’s behavior through careful observation and experimentation and to create mathematical descriptions of that behavior. This can take many forms: ranging from the study at the very small scale, of subatomic particle interactions using particle accelerators, or it could be at the universe-spanning scale of the study of gravitational waves with a large laser interferometer. Careers in physics may involve research, development, and commercial applications in areas like optics, man-made materials, and aeronautics.

At GRC, we offer the prerequisite courses in math, science, and other areas that will enable you to transfer to four-year schools which offer degrees in physics or astronomy. After completing a 4-year degree in astronomy, or physics, you may choose to go to graduate school to pursue research or find employment in the public or private sectors.

See Articulation Agreements for more details about the colleges who accept this degree.

Students are responsible for knowing transfer requirements and policies, as well as specific course choices and GPA requirements, are urged to consult the catalog of the institution for which they plan to transfer.

Sample Career Options

This degree can lead to a large number of career possibilities, some of which may include what you find at the right. The majority of these jobs require a bachelor’s degree and this degree can assist you with earning that bachelor’s degree.

Transferability of Credits

Green River College is fully accredited. Academic courses will usually be accepted by other institutions offering the same (or similar) courses. However, each institution has its own transfer policies and each student is responsible for knowing the transfer and admission requirements of the receiving institution. Students are urged to consult with their advisor and a representative from the college they plan to attend after Green River.
