WTECH 182 - Pumps and Pumping Systems

Examines pumps and pump piping systems used in water and wastewater applications. Emphasizes operational theory, application and basic maintenance of centrifugal pumps.

Enrollment Requirement: MATH 72, MATH 97 or eligible for MATH 97.

Course Outcomes:
Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:

Classify the types of pumps typically found in water and wastewater utilities
Interpret pump system data to evaluate performance of pump stations and related equipment.
Describe the general and mechanical principles related to centrifugal pumping systems.
Implement start-up and shut-down procedures for centrifugal pumping systems.
Identify and schedule general maintenance and repairs on centrifugal pumping systems.
Identify normal and abnormal operating conditions for centrifugal pumping systems.

Identify characteristics of water used to provide public drinking water through municipal water distribution and water treatment systems.
Identify the characteristics of wastewater conveyed and treated in municipal wastewater collection and wastewater treatment systems.
Monitor, evaluate and adjust processes used in municipal water distribution, water treatment, municipal wastewater collection and wastewater treatment systems.
Monitor, evaluate, operate and maintain common types of equipment found in municipal water distribution, water treatment systems, municipal wastewater collection and wastewater treatment systems.
Apply appropriate safety procedures to operation of municipal water distribution, water treatment, municipal wastewater collection and wastewater treatment systems.
Collect samples for, perform and interpret results of laboratory analyses used to monitor municipal water distribution, water treatment systems, municipal wastewater collection and wastewater treatment systems.
Perform supporting administrative duties for municipal water distribution, water treatment, municipal wastewater collection and wastewater treatment systems.
