Medical Office Support Certificate

The Medical Office Clerk Certificate prepares students for entry-level employment in physician practices, emergency rooms, ambulatory facilities, hospitals and other medical facilities. Students will train to perform medical office duties including patient scheduling, registration, paper and electronic medical record access and data entry. Students will obtain training in medical terminology, general billing, reports, and correspondence.

These classes may be applied toward the two-year Associate in Applied Arts Degree. Students in this program must complete each class with a grade of 2.0 or higher.

Program Outcomes:


  1. Accurately spell, pronounce and define common medical terms related to major disease processes, diagnostic procedures, laboratory tests, abbreviations, drugs, and treatment modalities. 
  2. Develop an understanding of the structure and function of the healthy human body, diseases and treatment modalities. 
  3. Identify the different types of healthcare providers, disciplines, common departments and general structure found within healthcare organizations. 
  4. Analyze and verify medical record and documentation accuracy and validity. 
  5. Identify and define medical disease, diagnosis, procedural terms and abbreviations. 
  6. Abstract diagnostic and procedural terminology to accurately assign ICD-10-CM, CPT-4 and HCPCS level II codes. 
  7. Define key legal concepts related to healthcare  
  8. Perform mathematical calculations needed to process a claim, determine allowed amounts, deductibles and co-payments, process cash, check and electronic payments, and balance monthly and yearly financial records. 
  9. Complete all general medical practice management software tasks such as registering and scheduling patients, searching and reviewing medical records online, entering codes, payment and other electronic health record (EHR) tasks.
