Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs A to Z

90 Credits

This degree program is designed for students that wish to take Mechatronics, and upon graduating flow into a bachelor’s program in the field of Mechatronics and/or Automation.

A graduate of the program will be prepared for theory and application of various principles of Mechatronics. Instruction covers the basic energy types that animate and/or control machinery. These energy types are mechanical energy (solids), hydraulics, pneumatics and electrical. The student will become familiar with machinery components that conduct, control, and apply the various energy types. Additional areas of study include, industrial wiring, industrial rigging, motor logic control, electric fluid power, PLC (programable logic controller), automation and robotics (optional industry certification, available for MTX 150  only), and an optional forklift certification.

Credit for hours of training is usually granted to those entering an approved apprenticeship program. Entry into the program at any time is possible on a space-available basis with instructor’s permission.

Program Outcomes:

Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:

  1. Apply electrical and electronic theory to troubleshoot, repair, and optimize industrial control circuits using compliant wiring methods, VFDs, and PLCs.

  2. Design, assemble, and maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems, applying fluid power principles, safety standards, and contamination control practices.

  3. Program, integrate, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI systems to control industrial processes using structured programming and networked communication protocols.

  4. Perform mechanical alignment, installation, and preventive maintenance of drive systems, bearings, and actuators using precision tools and documentation.

  5. Apply OSHA/WISHA and NFPA safety standards to identify, control, and document electrical, mechanical, and fluid power hazards in the workplace.

  6. Integrate robotic and automated systems with PLCs and sensors, validating safety zones and optimizing performance in capstone and lab projects.

  7. Develop and implement predictive and preventive maintenance (PM/PdM) strategies using condition-based data and reliability-centered methods.

  8. Demonstrate effective teamwork, communication, and professional conduct, producing technical documentation, presentations, and project reports.
