MATH 147 - Finite Mathematics-Business and Social Science Credits: 5 Study of graphs and solutions of linear equations, systems of equations, matrices, linear inequalities and linear programming, the simplex method, piecewise defined, quadratic, polynomial, rational exponential and logarithmic functions, and financial formulas. Many problems and examples are drawn from the fields of business, economics, and social science. Graphing calculator required.
Prerequisite: MATH 097 with a grade of 2.0 or higher; or appropriate math placement.
Satisfies Requirement: Natural Science and Quantitative Skills
Course Outcomes: Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:
- Solve systems of linear equations.
- Interpret the results of solutions to equations and inequalities.
- Perform matrix operations.
- Solve linear inequalities and linear programming problems.
- Solve equations involving quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential or logarithmic functions.
- Use interest and annuity formulas to solve finance problems.
- Use function notation and terminology.
Program Outcomes
- Recognize which quantitative or symbolic reasoning methods are appropriate for solving a given problem.
- Correctly implement the quantitative or symbolic reasoning methods that are appropriate for solving a given problem.
- Translate data into various formats such as symbolic language, equations, graphs, and formulas.
College-wide Outcomes
- Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning - Quantitative Reasoning encompasses abilities necessary for a student to become literate in today’s technological world. Quantitative reasoning begins with basic skills and extends to problem solving.
