PTA 106 - Neuroscience for the PTA Student

Credits: 2
Introduces neuroscience as it relates to the practice of physical therapy.

Prerequisite: PTA 104  and concurrent enrollment in PTA 166 .

Course Outcomes:
Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:

  1. Describe the basic structure and function of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system.
  2. Identify the neurophysiological principles that form the basis for selected rehabilitation techniques.
  3. Describe the primary somatosensory pathways.
  4. Identify the systems that produce and regulate motor output.
  5. Identify the three sensory mechanisms used in maintaining balance.
  6. Describe the signs and symptoms of diseases and disorders affecting the nervous system.
  7. Explain how nervous system dysfunctions affect functional ability.
  8. Complete sensory testing for primary and cortical sensations.
  9. Map the results of a sensory test and identify dermatome and peripheral nerve distributions when given a sensory distribution chart.
  10. Describe testing for selected cranial nerve functions and relate to the associated cranial nerve.  
  11. Describe the signs, symptoms, and likely causes of movement disorders seen with upper and lower motor neuron dysfunction. 
  12. Administer standardized functional outcome measures for balance.
  13. Describe the movement disorders seen with pathology of the basal ganglia and of the cerebellum.
  14. Define the terminology used to describe levels of consciousness. 
  15. Identify the four components used to assess orientation.
  16. Describe how mental function is assessed.
  17. Administer and score the Mini Mental Status Examination.

Program Outcomes
  1. Implement plans of care developed by the PT.
  2. Provide care in a safe, legal and ethical manner.
  3. Communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, families, PTs, and other care providers both verbally and non verbally including accurate written communication and documentation.
  4. Instruct patients,families and other care providers using techniques consistent with the level of the audience.
  5. Function as an integral team member and participate in the team process.
  6. Transition to successful employment as PTAs.
