MFG 109 - Advanced Additive Manufacturing Credits: 3 Provides an in-depth look at Applied Rapid Prototyping and Hybrid Manufacturing. Important topics include: material selection based on prototype function, ensuring dimensional stability of prototypes, maintaining parts surface finish quality, and post-processing prototypes using multi-axis Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machining processes.
Enrollment Requirement: MFG 108 and instructor consent.
Course Fee: $100.00
Course Outcomes: Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:
- Describe how Additive Manufacturing (AM) system users can protect themselves against common mechanical, electrical, thermal, and airborne hazards.
- Demonstrate the use and understanding of personal protective equipment (PPE), lockout/tag-out procedures, Hazard Communication Standards (HCS), and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Demonstrate material knowledge by selecting the proper material based on prototype form and function.
- Accurately measure printed parts using precision tools such as calipers and micrometers.
- Apply Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) skills learned to the operation of a 3D printer to reduce cycle time.
- Demonstrate variable setups to reduce post-processing and material waste.
- Select print configurations to improve print quality and dimensional stability.
- Process parts to comply with engineering, client and blueprint requirements.
Program Outcomes
- Demonstrate accuracy and safety in the completion of manufacturing tasks.
- Use precision measuring instruments correctly.
- Produce a correctly sequenced job/build plan.
College-wide Outcomes
- Critical Thinking - Critical thinking finds expression in all disciplines and everyday life. It is characterized by an ability to reflect upon thinking patterns, including the role of emotions on thoughts, and to rigorously assess the quality of thought through its work products. Critical thinkers routinely evaluate thinking processes and alter them, as necessary, to facilitate an improvement in their thinking and potentially foster certain dispositions or intellectual traits over time.
- Responsibility - Responsibility encompasses those behaviors and dispositions necessary for students to be effective members of a community. This outcome is designed to help students recognize the value of a commitment to those responsibilities which will enable them to work successfully individually and with others.
- Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning - Quantitative Reasoning encompasses abilities necessary for a student to become literate in today’s technological world. Quantitative reasoning begins with basic skills and extends to problem solving.
