ECED& 138 - Home Visiting & Family Engagement Credits: 3 Plan and provide home visits and group activities that promote secure parent-child relationships and support families to provide high-quality early learning experiences that are embedded in everyday routines and experiences. Course may include fieldwork.
Enrollment Requirement: Instructor consent.
Course Outcomes: Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:
- Describe developmental milestones from birth to 36 months articulating the influences of individual development, temperament and cultural norms.
- Articulate a plan that creates reciprocal, culturally sensitive partnerships with families.
- Develop an outline for effective home visits that includes awareness of family and home visitor safety.
- Create a plan for effective communication with families to develop shared goals and understanding of school readiness skills.
- Define Reflective Practice and identify how it might be implemented.
- Construct a curriculum to be delivered in a home visiting or group socialization model, checking for developmentally, linguistically, and culturally appropriateness.

- Use developmental milestones and observations of children’s behavior as a foundation for planning appropriate activities.
- Advocate for strategies that promote the cultural diversity of children, families and their communities.
- Demonstrate effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication.
- Discuss current issues and trends in early childhood education.
- Identify typical and atypical growth and development (cognitive, linguistic, motor, and social).
- Positively support children’s whole development.
- Display a positive attitude and enthusiasm for the job.
- Develop rapport and contribute to the work environment as a member of the instructional team.
- Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct.
- Comply with laws (such as IDEA, Section 504, ADA), workplace policies, and procedures in relation to confidentiality, reporting of abuse, discipline, chain of command and delegation and supervision.
- Design, set up and manage safe, healthy environments, spaces, equipment and materials which invite learning.
- Discuss the dynamics of family structure.
- Involve parents and community agencies in early childhood development.
