MATH& 107 - Math in Society

Credits: 5
Study of various mathematical topics including growth models, finance, statistics, and probability. Additional topics may include voting theory, fair division, networks, scheduling, apportionment and other fields. 

Enrollment Requirement: MATH 97  with a grade of 2.0 or higher; or either MATH 72  or TS/TS-OD 57 with a grade of 2.5 or higher and concurrently enrolled in MATH 30 Support Course for MATH& 107  ; or appropriate math placement. 

Satisfies Requirement: Natural Science and Quantitative Skills

Course Outcomes:
Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:

  1. Calculate compound interest income. 
  2. Calculate payments for the amortization of a loan and deposits for annuity accumulation.  
  3. Use linear and exponential growth models to make predictions.  
  4. Identify different types of samples of a population. 
  5. Analyze data from censuses, surveys, and comparative experiments. 
  6. Graph data using box plots and histograms. 
  7. Calculate and analyze descriptive statistics including mean, median, standard deviation, and quartiles. 
  8. Describe sample spaces and calculate the probability of events in a random experiment. 
  9. Solve modern application problems.

  1. Recognize which quantitative or symbolic reasoning methods are appropriate for solving a given problem.
  2. Correctly implement the quantitative or symbolic reasoning methods that are appropriate for solving a given problem.
  3. Translate data into various formats such as symbolic language, equations, graphs, and formulas.
