The Scopist certificate program prepares students to work in collaboration with court reporters and captioners. Scopists perform editing and word processing functions on a court reporter’s draft transcript file, research technical and industry-specific terms, and ensure all aspects of transcription are accurate. Scopists also assist with realtime editing during select live captioning events. Scopists must have a strong understanding of machine shorthand theory in order to recognize untranslates and define steno outlines. This understanding of theory, along with a working knowledge of specialized computer-aided transcription (CAT) software, sets the scopist apart from a traditional proofreader/editor.
