Medical Assistant Phlebotomy Certificate

This certificate meets the training requirements to apply for the Washington State Department of Health Medical Assistant Phlebotomy certificate. This certificate provides basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, ethical, legal and regulatory issues, safety measures, infection control, special collections, how to avoid errors to becoming successful in collection and transfer of blood specimens in our current industry. Skills and techniques acquired in this certificate are veni and capillary blood collections, EKG and vital signs. BLS and HIV/AIDS certificates are acquired. A minimum grade of 2.5 or higher is required in each course.

Students will be eligible to take the national board exam upon satisfactory completion of the program.

Admission Requirements:


  • Must be at least 18 years old Valid photo ID (driver’s license or any state-issued photo ID)
  • Must complete the Background Attestation Form
  • College Success Assessment score of 72 or higher, or CASAS Assessment score of 236 or higher
  • Uniform, text book and class supplies
  • Liability Insurance is required for participation in the program

Program Outcomes:


Students who successfully complete this program will be able to: Describe phlebotomy, phlebotomy services, ethical, legal, and regulatory issues including HIPPA.

  1. Describe anatomic structures and function of body systems using correct medical terminology in relation to services performed by phlebotomists.
  2. Describe standard operating procedures to collect specimens including blood collection equipment, documentation, specimen handling, and transportation. 
  3. Describe special collections in phlebotomy and effect on client safety.
  4. Perform infection control techniques and safety complying with federal, state, and locally mandated regulations regarding safety practices.
  5. Perform all steps of phlebotomy procedures including collection of equipment, reagents, supplies, interfering chemical substances, specimen requisitioning, collection, transport and processing.
  6. Communicate appropriately and professionally in the workplace. 
  7. Document vital signs, EKGs, and phlebotomy procedures.
