MATH& 254 - Calculus IV Credits: 5 The fourth course of a four-quarter calculus sequence. Introduces students to functions of two and three variables; limits and continuity; partial differentiation; gradients; multiple integration; iterated integrals; vector analysis including such topics as divergence, curl, line integrals, and the fundamental theorems of vector calculus. Graphing calculator required.
Prerequisite: MATH& 153 with a grade of 2.0 or higher; or appropriate math placement.
Satisfies Requirement: Natural Science and Quantitative Skills
Course Outcomes: Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:
- Determine domains, ranges, limits and continuity for multivariate functions.
- Compute and apply partial derivatives.
- Compute and apply double and triple integrals.
- Convert rectangular integrals into polar, cylindrical or spherical integrals.
- Compute and apply line integrals.
- Find the divergence and curl for vector fields.
- Compute surface integrals using Stokes’ Theorem and the Divergence Theorem.
Program Outcomes
-
Recognize which quantitative or symbolic reasoning methods are appropriate for solving a given problem.
-
Correctly implement the quantitative or symbolic reasoning methods that are appropriate for solving a given problem.
-
Translate data into various formats such as symbolic language, equations, graphs, and formulas.
College-wide Outcomes
- Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning - Quantitative Reasoning encompasses abilities necessary for a student to become literate in today’s technological world. Quantitative reasoning begins with basic skills and extends to problem solving.
